From Fear to Strength: A Mother’s Journey in Helping Her Children Heal
The past fortnight has been one of the most challenging of my life. My daughter coming back home to me from the other side of the country. Escaping a home marked by drug addiction, neglect and abuse. The stories she’s shared since arriving here have left me shaken. As a mother, it’s hard to put into words the helplessness I’ve felt wanting to protect her, wanting to rewrite her story, and at times even feeling the need to apologise for someone else’s actions.
But alongside that helplessness has been a deep and unshakable love. And now, another part of my heart is still there my son, who continues to live in that environment. That fear never leaves. I carry it daily.
I won’t lie, I have felt mentally exhausted at times. There are nights I lie awake, questioning, worrying, planning. Yet, even in this exhaustion, I keep coming back to the truth I know not just as a mother, but as a coach and someone deeply grounded in NLP: healing and transformation start from the inside out.
What I want my children to know what I remind myself daily is this:
-
They have a choice. Even in situations that feel impossible, we all have the ability to choose how we see ourselves and how we move forward.
-
They are stronger than they know. Trauma tells us we are weak, but resilience proves the opposite.
-
They are loved. No mistake, no past, no pain can erase the love I have for them, and the love they can reclaim for themselves.
I cannot erase the past for my children. But what I can do is help them rebuild. To help them learn to trust their own inner strength. To see themselves not as victims of circumstance, but as authors of their own future.
This is the work I’ve dedicated my life to, both personally and professionally. Helping people break free from the chains of fear and step into their power. And now, more than ever, I am called to bring this home to my own family.
To any parent, child, or individual reading this who has lived through fear, abuse, or trauma, please know you are not alone. Healing is possible. Change is possible. Strength already lives within you it just needs to be uncovered, nurtured, and believed in.
This journey is far from easy, but it is possible. And we walk it together.
